So we have to talk about the drama that has been playing out in the past week between OpenAI and Elon Musk. Montana became the first state to authorize a complete ban on TikTok when lawmakers passed SB419 in April and Gov. US officials have said that Chinese government influence over ByteDance could potentially lead to US TikTok users’ data being exposed to Beijing — which might facilitate spying, blackmail or other espionage activity. Alexander Berengaut, an attorney for TikTok, responded by quoting Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen’s own past words about the ban that have characterized TikTok as an alleged agent of China. Ambika Kumar, an attorney representing the group of TikTok creators, said SB419 tramples on the First Amendment rights of consumers and of TikTok itself. Knudsen could have even gone on television to issue public service announcements warning Montanans not to use TikTok, Malloy suggested.

A rise in shareholder activism and regulatory demands has forced company boards to adapt — and fast. That's why the National Association of Corporate Directors spent the last six months examining the role that culture can play in a board's success. Led by Oscar Munoz, former CEO of United Airlines, and Mary Winston, a director at Acuity Brands, Chipotle, Northrop Grumman and TD Bank Group, the NACD Blue Ribbon Commission drafted a collection of recommendations to help boards strengthen their culture and performance. "Boards have long expected management to take ownership of the values, beliefs, behaviors, and norms that make up the culture within an organization," Munoz said in a statement. "Now, it's time for directors to turn inward and embrace that same sense of ownership — but of their own boardroom culture."

Editor’s Note: Jon Lewis is a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University, where he studies domestic violent extremism. However, the 814-page document devoted less than three pages to making recommendations, and in those, perplexingly failed to offer a meaningful set related to domestic terrorism. There is little question that right-wing extremism, particularly white supremacist extremism, is currently the deadliest and most pervasive domestic terrorism threat facing the United States. Nearly 1 in 4 of these right-wing extremist killings were committed in the name of white supremacist terrorism – a staggering 251 total deaths. We stand at a crossroads in the fight against domestic terrorism.

Just half of the public said that they had helped friends or neighbors informally during the year—e.g., lending tools, tending children—and few did so frequently. Since pandemic social-distancing rules were operating in parts of the country in this period, such findings are not entirely surprising. But they also reflect trends with a longer arc, such as the decadeslong decline in the membership of social and civic groups. The U.S. seems to have gone from “a nation of joiners” (as the historian Arthur Schlesinger Sr. put it in 1944) to “a nation of spectators” (as a blue-ribbon commission declared at the end of the 1990s). More than a few people, following a theme in Tocqueville’s “Democracy in America,” worry that reduced social involvement will weaken the skills and customs needed for democratic government.
'Conflict of interest'Schmidt's investment was just the first of a handful of direct investments he would make in AI start-up companies during his tenure as chairman of the AI commission. Altogether, Schmidt and entities connected to him made more than 50 investments in AI companies while he was chairman of the federal commission on AI. To Poulson, Schmidt was simply given too much power over federal AI policy. The new entity would continue the work of the congressionally created federal commission, with many of the same goals and much of the same staff. More than a dozen staffers from the federal commission followed Schmidt to the new private sector project.
